At the time of this writing, I am 33 years old. You are not even born yet. As far as I know, I haven't even met your mother. But I am writing this because every day, I learn something new, and there are so many things that I want to make sure I remember to share with you. Some of it will be lessons I have learned. Some of it will be advice about life that I want to pass on. Some of it will be stories of people who I hope you will meet.
Depending on when you read this, you may think it's a lot of fun reading what your Dad was thinking years ago, or you may think it's silly. Some of it you may take to heart. Some of it you may disregard. I'm hoping you do more of the first thing. But even if nothing in this journal ever stays with you, know this:
I will do my best to be a good Dad, to help you learn right from wrong, to be here for you to celebrate with you in your victories and and comfort you in your defeats, to offer encouragement or lend you an ear. I may miss the mark from time to time. You may as well. I'll be patient with you, and I hope you will be patient with me. But no matter what else you see in the world, good or bad; no matter what other claims to truth you hear, no matter what lies break your heart; above all else, remember that I love you.
As long as you remember that, I'll know I've done right by you. I can't wait to meet you and see who you become. Til then.
Love,
Your Future Dad
